Different types of facelifts:
1. The S-Lift procedure
Most of our patients from Woolahra desire a facelift to improve their sagging and tired appearance, but are not prepared to spend a long period of time recovering from it.
Aggressive facelifts are becoming less popular, as they carry an increased risk of facial nerve injury and often involve long periods of recovery. Some of the conventional facelifts also produce an unnatural pulled appearance (“wind tunnel”), ear distortion, elevation of side burns and visible scars.
The general trend towards less invasive surgery led Dr Zurek to apply this concept to facelifts. He learned the technique of S-Lift from the originator of the procedure, Dr P. Ansari. In 1998, Dr Zurek performed the first S-Lift procedure in Australia, and has subsequently developed his advanced modification, which he called SAFE™ (S-Access Facial Elevation)™.
2. The Z-Lift procedure
In early 2000, Dr Zurek developed a lower face and neck lift, which he called the “Z-Lift”. The letter “Z” refers to the shape of the incision around the lower ear, and also coincides with his name initial.
Dr Zurek reported his procedure in Australia and at a number of international conferences, but after performing over 100 Z-Lift procedures, Dr Zurek retired this technique, as he was convinced that a vertical vector of elevating the platysma/SMAS was more effective. His current Z-Lift is a procedure that is customised to the particular concerns and expectations of our patients from Woolahra.
3. The thread facelift
In recent years, different facelift techniques using threads have become increasingly popular. First reported in 1956, when Buttkewitz used subcutaneously applied nylon thread to elevate tissue, the technique was further developed in 1999, when Dr M Sulamanidze described a technique of lifting soft tissue of the face with barbed or notched threads, made from polypropylene, which he called APTOS (Anti-PTOSIS) threads.
Dr Zurek thoroughly explored this concept, and as APTOS threads were not approved in Australia, he developed custom made, self-anchoring, bi-directional (barbed) threads using polypropylene (an approved suture material commonly used for many years in surgery). He trademarked the AGE Filaments™ (Anti-Gravity Elevation filaments) in 2002.
